I had a meeting with a client last week, and learned the most amazing thing about blogs and PPC ads. The client made a comment about the cost of PPC ads for search terms like managed hosting, confluence, and high end hosting.
The search terms are over $30 per click. I don't know how much that means for the blogger who has that ad on their site - but it costs $30 everytime you click on a managed hosting ad. Now, far be it from me to discuss the particulars of managed hosting on a blog just to draw ad revenue this way - in fact, I'll be ditching the Google Adsense very soon - they are already gone on the StlRecruiting.com blog.
But when I think about writing for the search engines, and for revenue, I sometimes lament my desire to write relevant content, and hope that sometime soon someone will ask me to write about recruiting someone for a high end hosting company.
Because then I wouldn't feel like a sellout. Which is why I try to keep the content on this blog pertinent to Recruiters. If I do a good job drawing local Seattle recruiters and local Seattle Staffing Firms to the site, I imagine I can find sponsors who want to reach those audiences. Ultimately, that's a more honest way to make a buck, and it provides real value to the reader.
But it still makes me laugh to write for an ad every once in a while. And if you are a regular reader, please don't click the ads unless they interest you. But if you are looking for high end managed hosting - I actually know a company that doesn't advertise that I would recommend highly.
